The
Beheading of King Louis XVI
King Louis XVI was beheaded on January 21st, 1793. He had the luxury of jumping into the job of being King of France when France was at its lowest point. It was poverty stricken from war, poverty was rampart, and food was scarce. The people were in a state of panic. The only one they turned to was the King.
The King was in a tight situation. He had to make the people calm down and fast. The only problem is France was bankrupt so he couldn’t use money to solve the problem. The only thing he did to make them happy was let them form the National Assembly.
The National Assembly was a unification of the common people to elect representatives to be able to pass legislation curtailing the King’s powers. The people were getting angrier as food prices soared and they blamed their problems on Marie Antoinette, She was the King’s wife and a foreigner which enraged Frenchman. The only thing keeping the King alive was his security.
That all changed when the Bastille, a former prison was stormed and took over by the people. The guards were killed and prisoners freed. This solidified the French Revolution. It showed the Louis that this is real. The people are not going to stop. The mob captured Louis and his family in 1791 and then recaptured him after he escaped in 1792. The people were crying out for his death.
The day of his beheading had come. A carriage arrived and picked up Louis XVI and carried him to the execution spot. The National Convention declared him responsible for crimes against France and condemned him to death. This was the first time in history the guillotine was used. The National Convention had declared France a republic and the populations cheered and shouted, “Viva le Republique”. France had won its independence.
Louis has left no legacy except being the scapegoat for French independence. He was hated as a man for his marriage to the foreigner Marie Antoinette. He was seen as a terrible ruler who didn’t try to help his people. Louis was condemned to death by people who didn’t understand the country situation politically. War left them bankrupt and there was nothing left. Louis is probably one of the unsung heroes of the revolution. He was one of the main reasons that set in motion the first free republic.
